Check for alternate titles on IMDb. They are also considered under copyright if they have a notice in the closing credits.

Thanks for the input. Yeah, I've searched every alternate title courtesy imdb. I didn't know about the closing credits copyright??? Some of the movies in mind have been released by public domain companies in jumbo comp dvd sets, etc.

There's a useful public domain chart at the Copyright Information Center at Cornell University. Anything produced from 1964 to 1988 with notice is protected. After 1988 notice nor registration are required. It's possible that the discount publishers are paying modest royalties, but more likely they don't do any research. Some just download movies from sites like this one and publicdomaintorrents. PDT can't be considered an authority on public domain.

I couldn't tell you that. Your best sources if you are not sure of something are probably the Copyright Catalog and these forums.
